Rafiki Safari Camp

Rafiki Safari Camp is the perfect family comfortable safari getaway with double/twin or family Luxury Safari Units, which have private bathrooms with showers and your own private veranda boasting views over the reserve to the distant mountains. Guests’ accommodation is finished with electric fans, cotton percale fabric linen and towels. The bedrooms are as “mosquito-proof” as possible, with gauze sashes on the windows and canopied mosquito nets over the beds. Please feel at home and make yourselves comfortable, Rafiki is thrilled to have you here in this little piece of the warm heart of Africa.

The Boma (Lodge) is the common area for the use of the lodge occupants, with a self-service bar, dining area and plunge pool. Tea and coffee in the mornings/afternoons, evening fires, kitchen amenities, plug points, guidebooks and perhaps a legendary story or two, can be shared in this communal space. The fully equipped kitchen comes with experienced staff that will take care of either catered or self-catering options. If the self-catering option is preferred, Rafiki will provide full housekeeping, waiters, resident cook and all amenities except food. Rafiki Safari Camp will happily cater for special eating requirements.

For those who want to get back to nature in the Miombo woodlands, Rafiki Safari Camp offers full camping facilities. Campers will be able to enjoy peaceful, quiet and tranquil campsites that are set in natural bush under indigenous trees with a traditional lapa for extra shade. The hot/cold water shower and flushing toilet block is powered using solar energy as is water heating and water supply. There is a small roofed area with power points adjacent to the toilet/shower block. Each campsite has its own braai/barbeque, and is within a short walking distance of the full ablution block and dishwashing facilities.

Rafiki likes to keep on the beat concerning conservation, sustainability, organically produced foods and community development. The whole property is off the grid and 100% powered by sustainable solar energy. Reduce, reuse, recycle: make the most of our recycling bins. Rafiki has an organic vegetable garden with herbs and seasonal vegetables. The garden benches are made from recycled single use and other plastic. The Last Straw: to reduce plastic waste Rafiki Safari Camp opts not to provide single use plastic straws. Rafiki Safari Camp is assisting “With Change in Mind”, a small American NGO, to build a kindergarten school nearby.

Rafiki guests will enjoy lazing by the pool, peaceful, tranquil meanders through the forest or by the waters edge of the Bua River on our 60-acre property, which lies adjacent to the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. Off-site activities include: Game drives and walks; cultural village tours, property walks and  fishing. Day trips: to the lake, golf, horse riding, scuba diving and Nkhotakota potteries.

African Parks took over the running of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in 2015 and have since transformed the park, including introducing 500 elephants and 1500 other species such as sable, kudu, buffalo, waterbuck, impala and warthog. The Wildlife Reserve is home to some 280 bird species making it one of Malawis most important bird sanctuaries. Spanning a vast 1,800 km2 , the reserve stretches from the crest of the Great Rift Valley to within a few kilometres of the shores of Lake Malawi.
