Lake Malawi

Discover Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest lake and the second-deepest on the continent, covering 29,600 square kilometers. Known as the Jewel in the Warm Heart of Africa’s tourism crown, its cool, clear blue waters and golden sands create a breathtaking landscape. Spanning 365 miles from north to south and 52 miles wide, Lake Malawi occupies about 20 percent of Malawi’s total surface area. It’s famously called the “Lake of Stars” due to the lanterns of fishermen on their boats resembling stars in the night sky.

The beautiful beaches around Lake Malawi offer a wealth of activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, beach soccer, kayaking, sailing, boat trips, water skiing, sailboarding, beach volleyball, stargazing, and vibrant sand festivals.

Lake Malawi is home to its own National Park, designated to protect its unique endemic fish species, and is Malawi’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. With over 350 species of endemic cichlid fish, Lake Malawi is a true marvel of biodiversity.

In addition to Lake Malawi, don’t miss exploring other stunning lakes in the region:

  • Lake Chirwa: Known for its rich birdlife and vibrant fishing communities, this lake offers a serene environment for nature lovers.
  • Lake Nyasa: Located in the southern part of the country, it boasts beautiful landscapes and is less frequented, providing a peaceful retreat.
  • Lake Malombe: A smaller lake that connects to Lake Malawi, popular for fishing and tranquil boat rides.

Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, Malawi’s lakes offer unforgettable experiences waiting to be explored.

Malawi Islands

Malawi has two islands located within Mozambican territorial waters. Likoma is the larger of the two and Chizumulu the smaller. Likoma is best known for St Peter’s Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Africa and one that appears too big for its tiny island location. Likoma island has beautiful gardens like the Ulisa Gardens where people visit to appreciate nature and also has beautiful art galleries of art craft and culture art gallery. We also have Chizumulo, Maleli island, Mumbo and Domwe among other islands found in Malawi.
